Abraxas Capital Management Takes $1.58 Billion Short Position in Crypto
Abraxas Capital Management, a London-based investment firm, has amassed substantial short positions in cryptocurrencies through Hyperliquid, totaling approximately $1.58 billion as of October 6, 2026. The two wallets linked to the firm hold 5,120 BTC and 189,400 ETH, with additional short positions in SOL, HYPE, ENA, XRP, SUI, and PUMP among others. The combined value of these positions is around $948 million, with a paper loss of about $114.5 million.
The wallets have significant assets to cover potential losses, with millions in deposits logged. However, it remains unclear whether spot holdings may offset these shorts, meaning the net market exposure of the wallets is not fully established. Blockchain explorers Nansen and Arkham Intelligence have identified the addresses as belonging to Abraxas Capital Management, whose balances have grown notably in recent times.
The bearish bets could signal various strategies, such as hedging or provisioning, rather than insider knowledge of market direction. Large whale positions like these can also influence crowd psychology, a factor that sophisticated investors are likely aware of. The outcome of these massive short positions will depend on time and market movements, which may ultimately prove less indicative than they seem.
