AI Agent Purchases Drive XRP Ledger Payments Near 12 Million Mark
The XRP Ledger (XRPL) is approaching 12 million tracked x402 payments, driven by AI agents purchasing digital services. The x402 protocol allows software to pay for online access before receiving a resource, a process triggered by a '402 Payment Required' response. J. Ayo Akinyele, head of engineering at RippleX, noted the milestone on October 1, highlighting rapid growth as agents autonomously discover and pay for services.
By October 3, the settlement infrastructure t54 reported 11,965,947 x402 entries, with a seven-day average of 525,618 payments per day. Akinyele emphasized the XRPL's role in supporting blockchain settlement for the machine economy, citing the 500,000 payments per day as evidence of its expanding infrastructure.
The x402 payment flow involves a service responding with a price and requirements, the buyer signing a transaction, and the facilitator verifying it before submitting it to the blockchain. Developers can connect autonomous software to wallets using Ripple's AI payment tools, which support wallet creation, balance checks, and spending monitoring. Purchases can be made using $XRP or Ripple USD ($RLUSD), a dollar-backed stablecoin.
Most activity is attributed to data purchases and AI inference, with additional offerings in financial data, risk, and credit. The increase follows the earlier 1 million agent transaction milestone discussed in July. The capabilities of the XRPL, including three to five-second settlement and predictable transaction costs, support automated commerce, allowing programs to confirm transfer success before proceeding with tasks.
