AI Agents Snub XRP for Stablecoins in High-Speed Micropayments Shift
Autonomous AI agents on the XRP Ledger infrastructure are increasingly favoring regulated stablecoins over native cryptocurrencies. According to XRPL AI Hub data, these agents have started using Ripple's USD-pegged stablecoin instead of XRP for around-the-clock settlements.
The trend is highlighted by on-chain payment activity data showing the sustained dominance of Ripple's stablecoin, while transaction volumes in XRP have stagnated over the past week. This shift underscores BlackRock's research note that AI agents will build the economy of the future.
BlackRock notes that the global stablecoin market has already surpassed $300 billion in value, with an annual transaction volume of $11.6 trillion turning this asset class into a basic unit of account for AI. This circulating liquidity allows machine networks to reliably run high-frequency micropayments without causing friction or systemic blockages.
The machines' preference for stablecoins is due to their programming requirements. As Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong noted, the number of AI agents making transactions will grow exponentially, but they critically need predictable costs. Software's strict budgeting algorithms rule out volatile assets: even a change of a few percent in XRP's price within an hour could undermine an autonomous task's financial model.
