AI Hedge Fund Collapse Highlights Liquidity Risks in Margin Calls

A $20 billion AI hedge fund called Situational Awareness collapsed in July after losing about two-thirds of its value. The fund had gained 439% from the start of 2026 through June, but its lenders became uncomfortable with the expected returns.

The fund's collapse raises concerns for Bitcoin and other assets that may be sold quickly when margin calls hit. Situational Awareness was one of Wall Street's most persuasive investment pitches, built by a former OpenAI researcher who argued that AI would reshape industries and supply chains.

The fund invested in companies supplying the AI boom, including chips, power, storage, data centers, and other infrastructure. It eventually sold its public-stock portfolio, estimated at $16 billion, to Ken Griffin's Citadel.
