AI Safety Debate Divides Trump and Silicon Valley Leaders

A heated debate over artificial intelligence safety and regulation has emerged in Washington and Silicon Valley, pitting two distinct camps against each other.

On one side are President Donald Trump, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and former White House crypto czar David Sacks, who reject calls for AI slowdown and regulation. They claim that fears of runaway AI are a 'hoax' and a 'scam', and that the US needs to accelerate its development to stay ahead of China.

On the other side are leading AI researchers like Dario Amodei of Anthropic, OpenAI's Sam Altman, and Elon Musk, who have called for caution and slowing down model development due to concerns about AI risks. They estimate that there is a greater than 10% chance of AI 'killing all humans', according to Amodei.

The debate has reached Washington, with progressive leaders like Sen. Bernie Sanders, Rep. Chip Roy, and former White House strategist Steve Bannon uniting in support of AI regulation. Meanwhile, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that Trump is 'completely aligned' with Nvidia's Huang on the issue.
