Algorand Deploys Protocol Upgrade with Native Quantum-Resilient Accounts
Algorand has announced the successful deployment of its largest protocol upgrade since staking rewards were introduced in January 2025. The Algorand Foundation revealed that version 5.0.0, which introduces native Falcon-1024 accounts and resource-based fees, has reached the required 90% support threshold on August 15.
The upgrade allows users to create accounts protected by Falcon-1024 post-quantum signatures directly in the protocol, a feature that was previously only available through custom logic attached to an account. This new address format is separate from the classical key scheme, making it impossible for traditional keys to be treated as valid matches.
The Algorand Foundation has been working on post-quantum security since its June 2026 roadmap, and this upgrade marks a significant step forward in that effort. However, the foundation cautioned that other protocol components are still migrating and that the system is not yet fully future-proof.
