Algorand Unveils v5.0.0 Upgrade with Quantum-Resistant Accounts
Algorand has released version 5.0.0, its most significant protocol upgrade since staking rewards were overhauled in January 2025.
The update introduces native quantum-resilient accounts, a usage-based fee model, and expanded developer tools.
Quantum-resistant accounts are secured by Falcon-1024 post-quantum signature accounts, which the blockchain positions as a future-proof measure against emerging threats.
The upgrade also includes a usage-based fee model where transaction fees are aligned with the resources consumed. For instance, quantum-resilient signatures incur higher fees than simpler operations like basic transfers.
This dynamic fee structure aims to ensure fair pricing while supporting the infrastructure required to maintain the network.
