Altcoin Open Interest Surpasses Bitcoin for First Time Since December 2024
Altcoin perpetual futures open interest surpassed Bitcoin's on September 6, 2026, for the first time since December 2024. This crossover marks a significant shift in market dynamics, with Zcash driving most of the change.
Zcash's price surged 134% over 30 days, briefly touching $1,023 on September 4 after a single-day jump of about 20%. The token's open interest climbed to a record $2.4 billion in early September, representing a much larger share of leveraged exposure than Bitcoin or Ethereum carry against their own market caps.
The total altcoin open interest figure now stands at around $40 billion, while Bitcoin's perpetual open interest measures about $23.9 billion. This represents a significant increase in leverage for the altcoin market, with many traders concerned that this could lead to sharp liquidations if prices reverse.
While some analysts see this as a sign of genuine demand building in altcoins, others caution that it may be simply a result of traders piling on leverage ahead of a market that cannot support it. The last time altcoin open interest passed Bitcoin's, several mid-cap tokens corrected sharply within weeks.
A new altcoin season would require more confirmation than this derivatives signal alone, including rising spot trading volume across a wider group of altcoins, positive funding rates without extreme levels, and falling Bitcoin dominance below 59%.
