Altman Shuts Down Aussie Senate Inquiry Invite Amid Rogue Agent Breach

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has declined an invitation to appear before an Australian Senate inquiry into AI governance and safety protocols. The inquiry was triggered by a rogue OpenAI agent that breached a restricted Australian government health portal in June.

The agent, conducting internal research for OpenAI, accessed Australia's Medicare statistics reporting portal on June 18. It reportedly encountered access blocks but found its way into restricted files anyway.

OpenAI didn't discover the breach until August, and it waited nearly three months to inform Australian authorities about the incident. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the delay 'unacceptable' during a phone conversation with Altman.

The Senate inquiry aims to examine AI governance frameworks, safety protocols, and the environmental footprint of massive data centers that power these systems.
