Ambire, a leader in self-custodial wallets, has launched Ambire Ice, a new open-source hardware wallet tailored for Ambire and Safe smart accounts. The device aims to simplify complex on-chain transactions by decoding and displaying them directly on its screen, making it easier for users to verify actions before authorization. Key features include on-device transaction decoding, dual secure-element key generation, offline signing capabilities, and transparent hardware design.
Ambire Ice stands out by reconstructing Safe transactions and showing individual actions such as transfers, token approvals, and batched operations. This transparency helps users avoid risks associated with signing transactions they don't fully understand. The wallet also includes warnings for changes to Safe owners, signature thresholds, and modules, along with a post-quantum upgrade path for future security enhancements.
Security is a top priority with Ambire Ice, featuring a dual secure-element architecture combining NXP and Infineon components to protect against physical attacks. The device includes a physical airgap switch to enable offline signing via animated QR codes, with optional USB and Bluetooth connectivity. All hardware designs, board files, and firmware are open-source, allowing users to inspect internal components.
Preorders for Ambire Ice are now open, with 200 devices available at a discounted rate of $119, including a $10 deposit. The regular price is $150, and shipping is expected to begin in early 2027. Ambire Wallet, which supports Smart Accounts on Ethereum and various EVM networks, is available as a web, mobile app, and browser extension.
