Andreessen Warns Developer Liability Rule in CLARITY Act 'Kill Shot' to Crypto Industry

Share

A16z's Marc Andreessen called a proposed developer liability rule in the CLARITY Act a 'kill shot to the industry'. The bill, which aims to regulate the digital asset market, includes provisions that would hold developers accountable for misuse of their code. However, Andreessen argued that this would make open-source software development legally unworkable.

Andreessen compared the proposed rule to blaming a hotel owner for a guest's crime or an automobile manufacturer for a getaway car used in a robbery. He stated that open-source developers are usually unpaid and cannot afford to take on legal risk. Co-founder Chris Dixon also defended the bill, saying it strikes a balance between innovation and regulation.
