Aptos MonoMove Engine Boosts Onchain Transaction Speeds
Aptos has unveiled MonoMove, a new smart contract execution engine designed to significantly speed up onchain markets. Internal tests revealed that MonoMove could run transactions up to 55 times faster than the current system, with end-to-end workloads showing broader throughput gains of three to eight times. Specific improvements included order-book matching speeding up about seven times and liquidity-pool swaps gaining five to seven times faster execution.
MonoMove replaces the existing Move virtual machine entirely rather than making incremental updates. The engine is optimized for performance on a single processor core and is built to handle more tasks simultaneously. It uses specialized instructions prepared before transactions run and stores working values in registers to reduce repeated processing during execution.
Aptos tested MonoMove by replaying real mainnet transactions from DecibelTrade, showing notable speed improvements in various tasks such as collateral withdrawals, vault requests, perpetual requests, and order placements. However, the network has not yet published an independent benchmark, and production performance may vary once all safeguards are in place.
The full feature set of MonoMove is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, with a mainnet rollout targeted for 2027, pending testing and governance approval. Before launch, developers will compare MonoMove with the legacy AptosVM using identical transaction inputs to ensure consistency. The project also includes formal verification to test whether the code follows its intended rules.
