Aptos Unveils MonoMove for Up to 55x Faster Smart Contract Execution
Aptos Labs has introduced MonoMove, a major upgrade designed to significantly boost smart contract performance on the Aptos blockchain. Internal tests conducted by the company suggest that MonoMove could execute smart contracts up to 55 times faster than the current system. This upgrade is part of Aptos' ongoing effort to enhance scalability as more financial activities transition on-chain.
The new execution engine represents the largest scalability upgrade in Aptos' history, according to an X post by the company. Aptos aims to complete development by late 2026, with plans to roll out MonoMove on the mainnet in 2027. However, the timeline remains subject to a governance vote, which could influence the final release date.
Beyond speed improvements, MonoMove retains the asset protection rules of the Move programming language while adding new runtime checks. These checks are intended to catch potential errors before they impact transaction execution, reducing the risk of software bugs. Aptos is currently employing differential testing to compare performance between MonoMove and the existing engine, ensuring consistency before the upgrade goes live.
While the internal tests show promising results, the reported speed improvements are based on Aptos' own benchmarks rather than independent verification or mainnet performance. As development progresses, formal verification of critical components will be conducted to ensure the system's reliability before it is fully integrated into the network.
