Argentine President Javier Milei and his sister Karina Milei have had a criminal investigation into their alleged involvement in a cryptocurrency scandal dismissed. Federal judge Marcelo Martinez de Giorgi dropped the case at the request of prosecutors, stating that the reported events did not constitute a criminal offense.
The investigation centered around Milei's promotion of the cryptocurrency $Libra in February 2025. After he shared a post about the coin on X, formerly Twitter, its price surged before crashing shortly afterward, leading to significant losses for investors. Opposition members of Congress had even considered impeachment proceedings, with some accusing Milei of a rug pull, a scheme where promoters abandon a cryptocurrency after attracting buyers.
Milei maintained that he had acted in good faith and merely shared the information without endorsing the project. He claimed he deleted his post after learning more about $Libra and decided not to promote it further. The presidential office also emphasized that Milei had no role in developing the cryptocurrency.
In dismissing the case, the judge concluded that no criminally relevant deception had been proven. Milei has yet to publicly respond to the news of the investigation's dismissal.
