Armstrong: Blockchain Crucial for Autonomous AI Agents' Functioning
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong is pushing back against the idea that cryptocurrency companies should abandon blockchain and focus on artificial intelligence. Instead, he argues that the two technologies are complementary and essential for each other's growth.
According to Armstrong, autonomous AI agents will require programmable money and automated payment systems to function without traditional banking accounts or manual checkout processes. He believes that blockchain is a general-purpose technology like electricity or the internet, providing foundational infrastructure that becomes more valuable when used by AI systems.
Coinbase has developed an 'agentic finance stack' consisting of three components: Base, an Ethereum Layer 2 network; USDC, a dollar-linked stablecoin; and x402, a protocol enabling automated stablecoin payments for digital resources. This infrastructure enables machine-to-machine commerce at scale, where software agents can autonomously purchase and consume digital goods and services on cryptocurrency rails.
The adoption of x402 has been rapid, with Chainalysis reporting over 100 million transactions within nine months of its introduction in 2025. This growth suggests that agentic finance is becoming a commercial reality, with AI agents driving a meaningful new class of activity on the blockchain.
