Armstrong's Anti-Philanthropy Stance Sparks Controversy
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has caused controversy with his recent comments on charity and philanthropy. According to him, charities are 'actually a net negative' for the world, captured by ideology and often causing unintended consequences.
Armstrong, who co-founded Coinbase in 2012 and became one of the crypto industry's most prominent figures after the company's 2021 Nasdaq debut, has been critical of philanthropy. He signed Warren Buffett and Bill Gates' Giving Pledge in 2018, but quietly left the initiative in 2024.
In a recent interview on The Katie Miller Podcast, Armstrong explained his views: 'I guess I have sort of a contrarian view where a lot of charities and philanthropies are actually net negative on the world. And they get captured.' He cited the example of the Ford Foundation, stating that Henry Ford would be turning over in his grave if he knew what they were up to.
Instead of starting a charity or foundation, Armstrong has opted for a donor-advised fund where he tries to put his money toward causes he believes are 'helping civilization advance.'
