Arthur Hayes Predicts Bitcoin at $126,000 by Year End
Arthur Hayes, co-founder of BitMEX and chief investment officer at Maelstrom, has predicted that Bitcoin (BTC) will reach $126,000 by the end of 2026. He describes this target as a “foregone conclusion,” though the math behind achieving it in less than three months presents a significant challenge. As of October 6, Bitcoin is trading at $86,050, which means it would need to gain 46% in value to meet Hayes’s prediction.
Hayes bases his forecast on increased money printing by governments and central banks, arguing that expanded money supply tends to flow into scarce assets like Bitcoin. The cryptocurrency’s capped supply of 21 million coins makes it an ideal recipient of this capital. However, testing this theory within a few months could be difficult, as Bitcoin’s price movements are influenced by multiple factors beyond monetary policy.
Bitcoin’s recent performance highlights the difficulty of reaching $126,000 by December 31. In the month leading up to October 5, Bitcoin rose about 8%, and an additional 3% in the past week. Even if this momentum continues, maintaining an 8% rise each month would only bring Bitcoin to around $108,000 by December, still $18,000 short of Hayes’s target. The coin’s market capitalization, currently around $1.73 trillion, would need to increase by about $800 billion to achieve the required 46% rise.
Other financial institutions have revised their Bitcoin forecasts for 2026, with Standard Chartered reducing its prediction from $150,000 to $100,000 and Bernstein lowering its estimate from $150,000 to $125,000. While Hayes’s long-term perspective on Bitcoin’s potential may still hold, his year-end prediction seems unlikely to materialize without a significant and sustained surge in buyer interest.
