Avalanche C-Chain vs X-Chain: A Guide to Avoiding Confusion

Avalanche, a major blockchain network, has three parallel chains: the C-Chain, X-Chain, and P-Chain. The C-Chain is the only one where tokens, smart contracts, and DeFi applications live. It's crucial to understand the difference between these chains to avoid sending AVAX to the wrong address.

The C-Chain is an implementation of the Ethereum Virtual Machine, making it EVM-compatible and using the same addresses starting with 0x. The X-Chain, on the other hand, handles the issuance and trading of Avalanche Native Tokens and uses addresses with the prefix X-avax. The P-Chain manages validators, staking, and custom network creation, with addresses beginning with P-avax.

To avoid sending AVAX to the wrong chain, one must recognize a C-Chain address, which looks exactly like an Ethereum address. It's essential to check the address prefix before sending funds. For example, if your wallet shows a 0x address, select the C-Chain at the exchange to ensure a smooth withdrawal.

MetaMask and other EVM wallets can be set up to handle the C-Chain, but it requires adding specific details from the official documentation. One must also ensure that the private key is stored securely, especially for larger amounts. The recovery words should never be photographed, stored in a cloud, or typed into a form.

The network fee on the C-Chain has decreased significantly since the Octane upgrade, making it barely noticeable. A simple transfer on the C-Chain currently costs around 0.000105 AVAX, which is about a tenth of a cent. The fee is burned in full, with validators receiving none of it.
