The Avalanche Foundation has outlined its AVAX tokenomics framework at Summit 2026, which could reshape how the AVAX token accrues value. FrostLedger, the Foundation's CIO, presented a research agenda that ties on-chain economic activity directly back to the token securing the network.

The framework, first published in July 2026, follows three steps: measure ecosystem output, capture protocol-level value, and distribute it. The presentation highlighted the challenge of connecting the economic value generated across Avalanche's growing ecosystem of subnets and applications back to AVAX itself.

Avalanche has a hard-capped maximum supply of 720 million tokens, with every transaction fee paid on the network getting burned, creating persistent deflationary pressure. However, as the genesis pool depletes, validators will eventually need to be compensated through other means or risk leaving for networks with better economics.
