Banks Warm Up to Stablecoins Amid Growing Competition in Payments Market
Major banks are shifting their stance on stablecoins, moving from opposition to potential adoption. A group of over a dozen financial institutions, including Bank of America and Wells Fargo, is exploring plans for a global stablecoin venture that will initially focus on the US dollar.
JPMorgan Chase has also evaluated launching its own stablecoin, but the bank has stated it has no current plans to issue one. The bank already operates JPM Coin, a tokenized deposit system.
The move comes as top stablecoins have accumulated hundreds of billions of dollars in market value, making it an opportunity that banks may be reluctant to miss. A consortium of 39 state bankers associations representing around 3,000 banks has also announced plans for a bank-owned blockchain platform.
