Bhutan Dumps 70% of Its Bitcoin Reserves Amid Hydropower Expansion

Bhutan has made a significant shift in its cryptocurrency strategy by liquidating its Bitcoin reserves. The kingdom reduced its holdings from 13,000 BTC in October 2024 to 3,774 BTC currently, marking a 70% decrease.

The rapid sell-off indicates that Bhutan has halted its hydropower-backed mining operations around November 2024. This move comes as the country focuses on expanding its hydropower projects, including the Khorlochchhu project, which relies on a 544 million USD loan from India's Power Finance Corporation.

The government had previously used Bitcoin to create well-paid jobs and support economic growth, but with the expansion of hydropower projects, it appears that Bitcoin mining is becoming less relevant for the national budget. The total GDP in 2024 stood at 3.1 billion USD, and the country aims to reach a tenfold increase in national product by 2050.
