Binance Buys $100M Stake in Circle as Five-Year USDC Expansion Plan Unfolds
Binance has made a significant investment in Circle, purchasing $100 million worth of shares at a 5% discount to the market price. This deal marks a five-year commitment from Binance to expand the use of USDC across its platform.
The agreement not only grants Binance distribution rights but also makes it a shareholder in Circle, giving the exchange direct economic interests in the company.
Binance will list and support USDC on its products, especially in emerging markets, and incentivize adoption through reduced fees for trading pairs related to USDC. Circle will provide infrastructure for holding and using USDC, while Binance aims to increase utilization of the stablecoin on its platform.
This deal could reduce Circle's reliance on Coinbase, which earns revenue from USDC held on its platform under a long-running agreement with Circle. Binance gives Circle another powerful route to users outside the United States and allows it to grow USDC without being reliant on Coinbase for distribution.
