Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, saw a surge in withdrawals as it resumed operations on Sunday following a massive hack. Customers pulled out US$3.64 billion, or 2.1% of the platform’s assets, after hackers linked by the FBI to North Korea stole US$6.3 billion last week. The exchange reported that withdrawal levels were stabilizing, while deposit volumes remained strong.
Binance has so far recovered 95% of the stolen assets, though the theft may rank as the largest financial heist ever recorded. The incident adds to a growing list of crypto-related thefts, raising concerns about the security of digital assets. Analysts noted that withdrawal trends will be a key indicator of whether users still trust the exchange after the attack.
Last year, attackers stole US$2.9 billion worth of cryptocurrency across nearly 150 incidents, according to TRM Labs researchers. The recent breach underscores ongoing vulnerabilities in the crypto space, despite advancements in security measures.
