Binance's USDC Push Challenges Tether's Dominance in Stablecoin Market
Binance's move to acquire $100 million in Circle equity and expand USDC integration is being seen as a strategic play that could challenge Tether's dominance in the stablecoin market.
The partnership, which began in December 2024 with 140 USDC-based spot trading markets, has grown to 329 markets by the end of this year, according to data from crypto analytics firm Kaiko. Monthly USDC trading volume has nearly doubled, jumping from a range of $20 billion to $40 billion before the partnership to over $80 billion recently.
Martins Benkitis, co-founder and CEO of Gravity Team, said that both Binance and Circle have 'clear incentives to grow USDC through Binance's user base and infrastructure.' However, he cautioned that expanding distribution alone won't change the situation overnight, as Tether has deep trading liquidity and local liquidity.
The market capitalization gap between USDC ($74 billion) and USDT ($140 billion) underscores the challenge that USDC faces in overtaking its rival. Analysts note that the growth of USDC is likely to be gradual, with a multipolar structure emerging in the stablecoin market.
