Bitcoin Adoption Surges Among Institutions Amid Spot ETF Boom
Institutional adoption of Bitcoin has accelerated sharply since January 2024, driven by spot bitcoin ETFs that have lowered barriers for investors. This trend spans most categories of regulated institutional finance, supported by maturing custody infrastructure and clearer rules.
Asset managers like BlackRock, Fidelity, and Grayscale run spot bitcoin ETFs, which hold the bulk of institutional Bitcoin exposure. Public companies such as Tesla, Block, and Metaplanet also hold Bitcoin on their balance sheets, with Strategy being the largest corporate holder with over 760,000 BTC.
Hedge funds were among the earliest adopters and remain active in spot, futures, options, and basis trades. Pension fund participation is more cautious and smaller in scale, but a handful of U.S. state and local pension funds have disclosed Bitcoin ETF positions through quarterly 13F filings.
