Bitcoin and Ethereum Rally Leaves Short Traders Reeling
Crypto markets experienced a sudden and significant surge on Wednesday, catching traders off guard as Bitcoin and Ethereum rallied. The unexpected price increase left many short positions exposed, resulting in an estimated $1.44 billion loss for those betting against these assets.
Bitcoin's price skyrocketed from near $64,681 to a high of $69,698 before settling around $68,509, marking a nearly 6% gain. This swift move led to the liquidation of over $893 million in BTC positions within 24 hours, with short traders accounting for $861 million.
Ethereum also experienced a significant rebound, gaining almost 9% and reaching an intraday high of $2,112 before trading around $2,087. The rally resulted in the liquidation of approximately $469 million in Ethereum positions over 24 hours, with short traders accounting for $424 million.
The wider market saw XRP and Solana both gain more than 6%, indicating a broader recovery across major assets. This move coincided with an unusually busy week for US crypto policy, including President Donald Trump's meeting with crypto leaders at the White House and the SEC's proposed new rules to make fundraising easier for some crypto projects.
