Bitcoin and Gold Prices Rise Together Amid Treasury's Bond Repurchase Plans
The price of Bitcoin and gold have recently started to move upwards together, marking a sudden increase in their correlation. This shift is being attributed to the actions taken by the U.S. Treasury Department, which has announced plans to double its repurchases of 10- to 30-year debt.
This move has led to a decrease in bond yields, making non-yielding assets such as Bitcoin and gold more attractive to investors. As a result, both assets have started to surge in price, with the SPDR Gold Shares ETF (GOLD) also experiencing an increase.
The 'digital gold' thesis, which suggests that Bitcoin can serve as a digital alternative to gold as a store of value, is being revived by this correlation. However, it's essential to note that assets can be correlated regardless of their price movement, and the idea of Bitcoin as digital gold should not be taken too literally.
Bitcoin's volatility makes it challenging to depend on as a store of value, whereas gold is generally less prone to wild price swings. The Treasury Department's actions are currently driving demand for both assets, but it remains to be seen if this correlation will persist in the long term.
