Bitcoin Blockchain Image Hunt Yields No Results Amid Scrambled Data
An investigation into the existence of images on the Bitcoin blockchain yielded surprising results. The blockchain was scanned using image recovery software, but none were found despite trawling over a terabyte of data.
The researcher used PhotoRec, an open-source program designed to rescue images from broken hard drives, to scan the blockchain for jpg, png, gif, tif, bmp, ico, psd, and raw formats. The process took over 11 hours but found no meaningful images.
A closer look revealed that XOR, a simple data obfuscation technique, is used to scramble all blockchain data at rest on a hard drive. This means that when the blockchain is not in use, its contents appear as random data and cannot be identified or extracted without intentionally bypassing the XOR.
