Bitcoin Breaks Through $72,000 Barrier as Regulatory Clarity and Spot Demand Drive Rally
Bitcoin's price surged past $72,000 on Thursday, marking its highest point since May. The rally comes after crypto markets recorded their largest-ever short-liquidation event on Wednesday, with $2.75 billion in shorts being liquidated.
Gideon Hyams of STS Digital said the squeeze was not the cause of the rally but rather a symptom. He attributed the breakout to falling long-end yields and a clearer regulatory path in Washington.
Nicolai Søndergaard of Nansen noted that the short covering has largely subsided, leaving the market dependent on continued spot buying. However, he said sustained acceptance above $70,000 would keep the outlook constructive.
Bitcoin's price rose to around $72,345 at publication time, according to The Block's data. Other cryptocurrencies like Ethereum and XRP also saw significant gains, with XRP jumping 20% in the past day.
