Bitcoin Consolidates Near $90,000 as Crypto Market Cap Hits $3 Trillion
Bitcoin's price has remained steady within a tight $85,000-$90,000 range for two weeks, hovering around $88,600 on January 2. The total cryptocurrency market capitalization reached $3.08 trillion, up 1.2% from the previous day.
The Bitcoin spot ETFs saw significant outflows in November and December, with a combined total of $4.57 billion, marking their worst two-month stretch since launching in January 2024. This decline coincided with a 20% drop in Bitcoin's price during the same period.
Despite this, analysts suggest that the consolidation represents institutional positioning rather than panic selling as markets await fresh catalysts in 2026. Ethereum (ETH) traded near $3,000, gaining 1.5% over 24 hours, while altcoins such as Cardano (ADA) and Dogecoin (DOGE) showed stronger percentage gains.
Market volatility measured by Bollinger Bands narrowed to its lowest level since July, suggesting a potential significant price movement ahead. Total Bitcoin ETF net assets stood at $113.29 billion on December 31, down 33% from an October peak of $169.54 billion.
