Bitcoin Correlation with Gold Surges Amid Treasury's Bond Market Intervention

The correlation between Bitcoin and gold has strengthened in recent weeks, sparking speculation that investors may soon see Bitcoin as 'digital gold' again. This shift was triggered by the US Treasury Department's announcement on August 19 to double its repurchases of 10- to 30-year debt.

This move led to a surge in both Bitcoin and gold prices, with Bitcoin's price increasing while gold's price also rose. The correlation between the two assets has swung from being negative earlier this year to strongly positive now, according to CryptoQuant chief executive Ki Young Ju.

However, experts caution that this correlation does not necessarily mean investors should view Bitcoin as a direct substitute for gold. While both assets share some similarities, such as their fixed supply and scarcity, they have distinct characteristics, including volatility, which makes them unsuitable for holding as a store of value at specific moments.

The main driver behind the increased demand for both gold and Bitcoin is the bond market, where investors are seeking safe-haven assets due to the Treasury's actions. By doubling its repurchases of 10- to 30-year debt, the Treasury is putting downward pressure on bond yields, making non-yielding assets like gold and Bitcoin more attractive.
