Bitcoin Defies Hawkish Fed, CLARITY Act Failure
Despite facing two significant headwinds, Bitcoin's price remains resilient and is trading above $78,000 at the time of writing on Friday. The cryptocurrency's value has been bolstered by institutional demand, which shows early signs of weakness due to spot Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) experiencing a second straight week of outflows totaling over $420 million through Thursday.
The failure of the Digital Asset Market Clarity (CLARITY) Act in the US Senate on Tuesday and a hawkish Federal Reserve (Fed) outlook have also raised concerns about Bitcoin's upside potential. The CLARITY Act, which aimed to provide regulatory clarity for the cryptocurrency industry, fell short of the 60 votes needed to advance, receiving only 49 YEA and 50 NAY votes.
US President Donald Trump had been a strong supporter of the bill, but it was ultimately opposed by Democrats who argued that it did not go far enough in addressing President Trump's financial interests in crypto. The failure of the CLARITY Act has shifted attention to the regulators, with the US SEC releasing its long-awaited 'Innovation Exemption' measure on Thursday.
The measure allows certain venues to facilitate on-chain trading of tokenized US stocks without registering as exchanges, provided they meet several conditions. This move reaffirms the SEC's commitment to providing oversight within its existing authority, despite the setback for the CLARITY Act.
