Bitcoin Defies Interest Rate Fears, Gold Falls as Inflation Looms
Bitcoin has defied expectations by remaining above $80,000 as gold weakens in value. The divergence between these two assets raises questions about whether Bitcoin can better withstand higher interest rates than gold. This phenomenon is particularly notable given the recent warnings from Federal Reserve officials that inflation may require restrictive monetary policy.
The correlation between Bitcoin and gold has dropped to minus 0.9, its lowest level in three years, indicating opposite price movements. However, this reading alone does not confirm whether Bitcoin has decoupled from interest-rate pressures. A 70% decline in the $BTC/gold ratio suggests that Bitcoin may be developing a life of its own.
Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack warned that prolonged inflation could lead to an inflationary mindset setting in, which is a significant concern for investors and policymakers alike. The July personal consumption expenditures price index rose by 3.7% from the previous year, exceeding the central bank's target of 2%. This has led to higher interest rates, with the Fed raising its benchmark range to 3.75%-4%, while officials project another increase before year-end.
