Bitcoin Derivatives Plummet by Record 49,000 BTC

Bitcoin derivatives have seen their largest drop in a year, with a decline of roughly 49,000 BTC over the past seven days. This significant reduction in open interest marks a departure from the usual market dynamics.

The combined open interest across CME Bitcoin futures and perpetual futures has plummeted, with total derivatives open-interest base sitting at approximately $52.89 billion.

Interestingly, this decline occurred relatively quietly, which is unusual given its magnitude. Unlike previous instances of such a drop, the current market volatility has remained contained, with liquidations modest and perpetual-futures funding rates cooled.

The CME expiry on September 25 complicates the picture somewhat, as some of the reduction in open interest can be attributed to mechanical factors. However, the data still serves as evidence of meaningful deleveraging.
