Bitcoin Drops $2,000 in 20 Minutes, Triggering $400 Million in Liquidations
Bitcoin (BTC) experienced a sharp decline of approximately $2,000 in just 20 minutes on October 6, leading to the forced liquidation of around $400 million in leveraged long positions. This sudden drop triggered a wave of liquidations across major cryptocurrencies, with Ethereum (ETH) seeing the largest impact at about $158.62 million, followed by Bitcoin at roughly $118.73 million.
The liquidations extended to other altcoins, including XRP, Dogecoin (DOGE), BNB, and Sui (SUI), exacerbating market volatility. CoinGlass data highlighted that the liquidations were concentrated within a short timeframe, which can amplify price swings and create a chain reaction of position unwinds.
A long position is an investment that bets on rising prices, and when leverage is involved, these positions can be liquidated if prices fall below a certain threshold. Earlier on October 6, Bitcoin dropped below the $84,000 mark, slipping into the $83,000 range. Other major cryptocurrencies, such as Ethereum, XRP, and Solana (SOL), also saw declines.
