Bitcoin Edges Closer to Mainstream Cross-Border Payments
Bitcoin's ability to facilitate cross-border trade payments has gained significant attention in recent years. Its borderless network and peer-to-peer electronic cash capabilities make it an attractive option for businesses looking to streamline their international transactions.
In a typical scenario, an exporter invoices goods worth $100,000 to an overseas buyer. The buyer can purchase BTC and transfer the agreed amount directly to the exporter's Bitcoin address. Once the transaction is verified through sufficient blockchain confirmations, the exporter can either retain the Bitcoin or convert it into their local currency.
The use of Bitcoin as a settlement asset does not require both parties to use the same correspondent-banking network, eliminating the need for traditional payment intermediaries. However, this approach still involves some risks, particularly price volatility. If the value of BTC fluctuates between payment and conversion, the exporter may receive less fiat value than expected.
To mitigate this risk, businesses can consider using stablecoins, which combine blockchain-based settlement with values linked to currencies such as the US dollar. This provides greater price predictability for businesses settling invoices and cross-border transactions.
