A new study by DWF Labs challenges the notion that Bitcoin ETF flows can predict future price movements. The research indicates that flows in the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (NASDAQ: IBIT) and other spot Bitcoin ETFs are not reliable indicators of the cryptocurrency's future performance.
The study highlights that investors often chase performance, buying after rallies and selling after declines. This behavior leads to a weak correlation between ETF flows and Bitcoin's price, with the relationship fading within a few days. Many investors also exhibit a tendency to sell Bitcoin ETFs after relatively minor dips, such as a 7% decline, which skews the predictive value of flow data.
Despite the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF being the largest in the category with $68.7 billion in assets under management as of Friday, Oct. 23, the study finds that its flows do not provide better signals than those of smaller competitors. Inflows typically occur after significant price rallies rather than before them.
The findings do not discredit Bitcoin ETFs but serve as a reminder for investors to focus on other factors influencing Bitcoin's price rather than relying on ETF flows for predictive insights.
