The UK's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has launched its crypto authorisation gateway, marking a significant step toward the broader regulatory framework set to begin on October 25, 2027. The gateway opened on September 30, allowing crypto firms to apply for approval to continue operating in the UK market. The FCA has set a deadline of February 28, 2027, for businesses intending to remain active in the UK to submit their applications.
Applicants will need to demonstrate compliance with various requirements, including safeguarding, market integrity, consumer protection, and financial resilience. Existing registrations under anti-money-laundering rules will not suffice under the new framework. Firms must plan their capital, staff, systems, and applications while continuing to service customers, which could have commercial implications before the rules formally take effect.
International groups must also decide which UK-facing activities fall within the new permissions regime. For investors, a licence application does not guarantee authorisation, and approval from other global regulators does not automatically satisfy the FCA's standards. The upcoming milestones, including which firms apply on time and the permissions they seek, will be crucial in determining the regulatory landscape.
