Bitcoin Halving Clock Hits 61%, Next Supply Reduction Looming in 2028
The Bitcoin halving clock has reached 61%, marking another significant milestone in the cryptocurrency's predetermined issuance schedule. According to Root, a prominent on-chain and cycle analyst, this means that nearly two-thirds of the current four-year cycle has elapsed.
The next scheduled supply reduction is expected to occur around April 2028, when the mining reward will decrease from 3.125 BTC to 1.5625 BTC per block. This event is gaining attention as Bitcoin has recently broken above $86,000 and US spot Bitcoin ETFs have recorded nearly $1 billion in daily inflows.
The combination of these factors gives the halving countdown additional relevance, particularly with regulated US spot Bitcoin ETFs providing a direct channel for institutional exposure. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has also pointed to the next halving as a key factor in Bitcoin's medium-term trajectory, noting that the cryptocurrency has historically experienced price run-ups before halvings.
