Bitcoin Holds Steady Amid Currency Debasement Fears
Cryptocurrency markets have maintained their momentum as investors continue to seek safe-havens from currency debasement fears.
Bitcoin and Ethereum have held onto significant gains, with Bitcoin trading around $78,600 at the end of the week and Ethereum near $2,470. This follows a sharp rebound in late August, when both assets recovered from an earlier pullback that weighed on market confidence.
The recent price action is underpinned by sustained institutional demand through exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Inflows into US spot crypto ETFs have been particularly strong, with Bitcoin ETFs recording nine consecutive days of net inflows and Ethereum ETFs notching ten straight days of positive flows. This trend has contributed to a more constructive backdrop for the market.
A broader macroeconomic narrative has emerged behind the rally, driven by concerns over currency erosion. The so-called 'debasement trade', which sees investors rotate into hard assets such as gold and Bitcoin, has gained significant mainstream attention, with 1,533 Bloomberg articles mentioning the term last week, more than double the prior week's count.
Arian Neiron, VanEck Asia Pacific Managing Director, stated that this trend reflects a 'fiscal reckoning' for the world's largest economy. He noted that investors are seeking alternative stores of value due to the large US primary budget deficit and low long-term yields.
