Bitcoin Life Introduces Regulated Insurance Bond in Guernsey
Bitcoin Life, operating as Perpetual21 Limited, has secured a full regulatory license in Guernsey to function as an international long-term life insurance company. On September 17, the company launched its Bitcoin-denominated whole-of-life insurance bond, which allows long-term holders to park their Bitcoin inside a regulated insurance wrapper with built-in estate planning features.
The product is designed to last as long as the policyholder does and then transfer directly to named beneficiaries upon death. This direct beneficiary transfer sidesteps the messy probate processes that can leave crypto holdings in limbo when someone dies without clear instructions for their private keys.
Founder Peter Lane has described the product as a 'forever home' for Bitcoin, positioning the bond as a long-term wealth preservation tool denominated in Bitcoin. The insurance bond is housed in Guernsey, which has been used by high-net-worth individuals to manage tax obligations on investment gains. By housing Bitcoin inside this structure, policyholders can potentially defer or reduce tax liabilities depending on their home jurisdiction.
The company has partnered with various institutions for custody and oversight, including BitGo Europe GmbH, BWCI, Polo Insurance Managers, and Carey Olsen. Lane emphasized that Bitcoin is being integrated into a trusted regulatory structure rather than asking regulators to create something new.
