Bitcoin Miners Bet Big on AI, But Will It Pay Off?
Bitcoin miners are pouring billions of dollars into artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC), but the return on investment remains uncertain. According to BlocksBridge Consulting, a group of 15 public mining companies spent $30.7 billion in capital assets during their latest reporting periods for 2026.
The expenditure is staggering, with some companies contributing significantly more than others. CoreWeave and Nebius, for example, combined contributed almost 75 percent to the total, with CoreWeave spending $14.12 billion on property and equipment during the first six months of 2026.
Despite the massive investment, AI and HPC revenue grew only 52% from Q1 to Q2 across nine comparable miners, reaching a total of $341.2 million. However, this still falls short of covering the capital expenditure, with a ratio of 15 times new revenue to factory capital expenditure.
The shift from mining to AI infrastructure requires significant upfront spending on construction and equipment purchases, which can take time to generate returns. The question now is whether these investments will pay off in the long run.
