Bitcoin Mining Difficulty Drops Amid Industry Shift to AI Contracts
The Bitcoin network has adjusted its mining difficulty for the 15th time in 2026. At block height 959616, the difficulty level dropped by 0.74%, from approximately 127.17 trillion to 126.23 trillion.
This downward adjustment follows a year marked by nine downward adjustments and six upward ones. The cumulative net decline is 13.82% from the opening level near 146.47 trillion.
The shift in difficulty reflects sustained economic pressure on pure mining margins. Large operators are pivoting to artificial-intelligence inference and high-performance computing contracts, which offer higher effective profit margins than traditional SHA-256 hashing.
