Bitcoin Mining Facility Cited for Massive Water Leak in El Reno
A massive water leak in El Reno, Oklahoma has raised concerns about the impact of Bitcoin mining operations on local infrastructure. The leak, which occurred at a facility owned by Athlon Blockchain Technology LLC, drained the Lake El Reno water tower and caused major supply problems in the city.
The facility, which specializes in mobile data centers for AI storage and Bitcoin mining, was cited for multiple violations, including a failed water line, lack of maintenance, and expired building permits. City officials discovered the source of the leak after crews searched for several hours using drones and helicopters.
Over 3 million gallons of water were lost in the leak, which caused outside watering to be prohibited and free bottled water to be made available to residents. The city's interim manager explained that crews had been monitoring the situation closely, but it took some time to discover the source of the problem.
