Bitcoin Mining Goes to Space in Quest for Cheaper Electricity

Bitcoin mining has long sought cheaper electricity to operate profitably. Now, one startup is taking that search to new heights, literally. Starcloud plans to launch a satellite in 2027 with onboard Bitcoin mining hardware.

The move comes as tougher economics are squeezing miners on Earth. The 2024 halving reduced the block subsidy from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC, while rising competition and network difficulty continue to cut margins.

As a result, some miners are redirecting their capacity toward AI and high-performance computing, where long-term contracts offer more predictable returns than Bitcoin mining. Large amounts of electricity, a valuable resource in this industry, may be the most valuable asset for these companies now.
