Bitcoin Mining Noise Disrupts Nearby School
A bitcoin mining operation has been operating directly across the street from Lake Superior Academy, a Montessori school in Sault Ste. Marie, since March. The facility consists of six metal shipping containers filled with continuously running computers. The noise from these machines has reached levels of 70 to 75 decibels, comparable to a running vacuum, and has been disturbing the young students 24/7.
The proximity of the mining operation to the school raises concerns about the impact of constant noise on the children's learning environment. The whining sound from the computers has been a persistent issue, with no signs of stopping. The operation's location so close to a school highlights the broader debate over the environmental and social costs of the data center boom.
