Bitcoin Options Expiry Looms: $15 Billion at Stake as Bulls Eye $100,000
Bitcoin traders are bracing for a potentially volatile week ahead of Friday's $15 billion options expiry. The September 25 contracts, which account for more than a third of all Bitcoin options open interest on Deribit, are set to expire. This has led to a surge in bullish sentiment, with the put-to-call ratio sitting at 0.70, indicating that more traders are betting on prices to rise.
The largest piles of call options are stacked at strike prices of $85,000, $90,000, and $100,000, with Bitcoin's current price trading around $84,258. This has some analysts warning of a potential 'max pain' scenario, where the largest number of options contracts would expire worthless, causing losses for option holders.
Market makers are expected to play a key role in mitigating volatility ahead of settlement, as they hedge their books and sell option premiums. However, past expiries have sometimes been followed by sharp price moves in either direction, making it difficult to predict the outcome.
