Bitcoin Proposal Aims to Expose Hidden Wallet Key Leakage
A new Bitcoin upgrade proposal, BIP461, has been drafted to standardize ECDSA signing and expose deviations that could signal hidden wallet key leakage.
The draft was merged into the BIPs repository on September 16 and remains marked Draft. It proposes reproducible ECDSA signatures under existing consensus rules, making it a potential fix for a hidden route for leaking wallet secrets.
According to the proposal, independent compliant signers should produce identical signatures for the same secret key and message hash, creating a benchmark for detecting departures that could conceal key leakage. However, comparing signatures alone cannot establish malice, and a mismatch warrants investigation into compliance but may have unresolved causes.
