Bitcoin Researchers Tackle Quantum Threat with P2MR and SHRINCS
Bitcoin's quantum-resistance roadmap is gaining momentum as researchers advance two proposals to protect funds from potential threats posed by future quantum computers. BIP-360 Pay-to-Merkle-Root (P2MR) aims to limit key exposure, enabling future upgrades and potentially bolstering Bitcoin adoption and security. However, the proposal faces development and adoption hurdles, including a difficult migration of already-exposed public-key funds.
Blockstream Research's SHRINCS targets quantum-resistant signatures but lacks full proof and review. Christine D. Kim, founder of Protocol Watch, identified BIP-360 and SHRINCS as complementary parts of a transition towards Bitcoin's quantum-resistance roadmap. The challenge centers on moving exposed funds without disruption.
Bitcoin's elliptic-curve signatures are the main concern, as a sufficiently powerful quantum computer could use Shor's algorithm to derive a private key from a visible public key. Researchers are working to address this issue before it becomes a significant threat.
