Bitcoin Resilient Amid Treasury Yields Surge to Decades-High
US Treasury yields surged to their highest level in decades, reaching 5.22% for the 10-year benchmark and 5.5185% for the 30-year yield. This has raised borrowing costs throughout the financial system, making it more expensive for investors to take on debt.
Despite this increase in risk-free yields, Bitcoin has held its ground near $84,000, having gained about 22% since August 19 when the 10-year real Treasury yield climbed 50 basis points. Analyst Camran Khosravi at Bitwise noted that Bitcoin's price performance is relatively resilient compared to other assets.
However, traders have been reducing their leverage in anticipation of potential market volatility. Open interest in Bitcoin derivatives fell by $1.7 billion, representing a 14.3% contraction in leveraged exposure. This reduction in leverage has helped mitigate the risk of cascading liquidations, but large pockets of positioning remain.
The Treasury market will continue to be an important test for Bitcoin's resilience as yields above 5% raise the opportunity cost of holding the cryptocurrency. Jurrien Timmer at Fidelity Investments noted that a 100-basis-point decline in yields could generate an 11.9% return for bond investors, while a rise to 6% would produce a loss of only about 1.9%. This asymmetry raises concerns about Bitcoin's ability to resist the rising tide of interest rates.
